KUALA LUMPUR – Former Bangi MP, Ong Kian Ming, has called for a full pardon for former Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak as part of a broader "political reset," aimed at promoting greater political maturity in Malaysia.

Ong suggested that such a move, alongside the dropping of charges against other political figures, could help the country move beyond its current divisions and encourage reconciliation.

Reflecting on recent developments, Ong noted that his stance on Najib’s potential pardon had evolved, particularly following the Discharge Not Amounting to Acquittal (DNAA) granted to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in 2023.

Citing Khairy Jamaluddin’s "Grand Amnesty" proposal, which includes a full pardon for Najib and the dropping of cases against other politicians, Ong argued that this could be the key to reducing political rivalry and fostering greater unity.

"I think it’s time for us to seriously consider the possibility of a full pardon for Najib in the new year," Ong stated. "This could pave the way for a political reset, reducing the use of state power against political rivals and promoting greater political maturity."

Ong’s comments follow the High Court’s decision to dismiss Najib’s judicial review application for house arrest, a ruling that triggered a strong reaction from various political figures. Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin, a DAP counterpart, sparked controversy by publicly celebrating the court’s decision, calling it "another reason to celebrate this year-end" on social media.

Ong condemned this celebratory tone, calling it "tone-deaf" and insensitive.

"Such remarks do nothing but inflame an already divided political landscape. It shows a lack of awareness of how many in the Malay community may feel about the humiliation of a former prime minister," he said.

"While many are rightfully aggrieved over 1MDB, there is no need to rub salt into the wound."

He further warned that this type of divisive rhetoric undermines the Madani government’s ability to function effectively and could damage the fragile unity between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional.

"If such statements continue, it could push BN towards closer cooperation with Perikatan Nasional, which would harm PH and its supporters," Ong explained.

Ong reiterated his call for a shift towards political maturity, urging leaders to focus on reconciliation rather than exacerbating existing tensions. "We need to start a serious dialogue about healing and unity, so Malaysia can move forward as a stronger, more unified nation," he added. - December 23, 2025
