KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu denied planning to propose the relocation of KL Sports City to Sepang, calling it “rubbish”.
When contacted by The Vibes, Faizal said nobody in their right mind would consider moving the entire sports complex from the current venue as it is not economically feasible.
“No need to go to the cabinet. Even I would throw out this idea.
“Those who think that I would propose such a plan are either out to tarnish my name or high on something,” he said.
However, Faizal said that there is a plan to relocate the NSC which has been in discussion for many years already, even before he took over as sports minister.
He said that it is only a plan to be proposed to the cabinet about relocating the NSC, not the entire sports complex.
“The current NSC headquarters is not conducive for our national athletes. It is so cramped now and we need a bigger space,” said Faizal.
Meanwhile, a source within the sports industry said that there is no proposal to move KL Sports City, but confirmed that the NSC and Bukit Jalil Sports School would be relocated due to lack of space and facilities.
“It makes sense for the NSC and Bukit Jalil Sports School to relocate as they need to be away from the city, but to move the entire sports complex is out of the question.
“Since the Bukit Jalil Sports School was the first of its kind in the country, the facilities are limited,” the source told The Vibes.
Earlier, it was understood that Faizal is expected to propose a plan to relocate the RM2 billion Bukit Jalil Sports Complex to Sepang as a developer has set its sights on the land for a mixed development project. – The Vibes, July 12, 2022
