Onn Hafiz sworn in as Johor MB for second term after BN landslide victory

MACHAP assemblyman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has been reappointed as Johor Menteri Besar for a second term after Barisan Nasional (BN) successfully retained power in the state with a landslide victory in the 16th Johor State Election.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru before the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, following BN’s victory with 48 of the 56 Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats contested.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured the remaining eight seats in the state election.

Also present at the ceremony were Johor Royal Council president Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Ramli and Johor State Secretary Datuk Mohammed Ridha Abd Kadir.

Onn Hafiz arrived at Istana Bukit Serene at 3.40pm, while Tunku Mahkota Ismail arrived at 4.25pm before the oath-taking ceremony commenced.

The official vehicle carrying Onn Hafiz left the palace at about 4.50pm after the ceremony concluded, with the BN Johor chairman waving to members of the media who had gathered outside.

This marks the second time Onn Hafiz has been entrusted with leading the Johor administration after he was first appointed as the 19th Johor Menteri Besar on 15 March 2022 following BN’s victory in the previous state election.

He succeeded Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad and took his oath of office before Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, who is now the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. - July 12, 2026
