Mimi Fly, Lifestyle Asia KL’s May 2025 digital cover star, is making her comeback this year. For 17 years now, Mimi has made her mark in the industry as more than just an artist and ‘creative spirit’ — she has become an icon and paragon of Malay-Nusantara music. She has dominated the scene with some memorable tunes, as well as a few very underrated ones. Just last December she released “Angkat”, her first single after four long years, and the song marked her start as an independent artist. And for Raya, Mimi also dropped the ultimate festive bop, “Serumpun”, which had Malaysians everywhere participating in the dance challenge while flaunting their baju Raya. The virality of the song may have been unplanned, but if you’re familiar with Mimi’s range of songs, you’d know that each song she has put out is a certified hit. Here, five songs that we’d recommend if you want to discover Mimi Fly.

#1. Serumpun

We’ll start with her latest bop, which was unplanned — much like the way it went completely viral. While “Angkat” was among the songs that Mimi recorded last year, “Serumpun” came about because she wanted to keep the momentum of “Angkat” going. “I felt like ‘Serumpun’ was a celebration song for me, for ‘Angkat’,” Mimi shares. “It wasn’t like I was trying to do anything. But I for sure want something nice, because it was my first Raya song. I wanted to have my message clear and true. And it came as a shock, you know, it came as a shock with the overwhelming response. It was surreal.”

#2. Enigma

“Enigma” was the first single Mimi released when she became a solo artist after her departure from hip hop group One Nation Emcees. A very clear deviation from her usual rapping style, “Enigma” is perhaps the truest, most raw showcase of Mimi’s vocals — letting the public know that she is first and foremost a lyricist and powerful vocalist. The song became the theme for the 2015 romcom Girlfriend Kontrak, and it was the first of many songs Mimi would sing for local films. (Following this, Mimi would write and perform “On It”, which was featured on Gol & Gincu Vol. 2, and “Hujan” for the 2020 film Bisikan.)

#3. Superfly

Also known as the ultimate female empowerment anthem. Released just after Mimi’s divorce, the song is a culmination of her sorrow mixed with self-confidence through the healing. After every heartbreak, the best way to get over it is to really, completely feel yourself and know that you’re truly one-of-a-kind — and this sentiment is perfectly captured in the song, especially the lyrics: Akulah beauty and the beast, aku feminist / Cuba kau disrespect me, nanti kau nangis. As Mimi puts it, Ramai kau jumpa tapi tak seperti aku. In other words, you should 100% know your self-worth, girl.

#4. Hoi Ya Hoi

This may be cheating a little, but we can’t help slipping in at least one One Nation Emcees song. A very apt tribute to the late and great P. Ramlee’s song of the same name, “Hoi Ya Hoi” puts a modern twist to the classic. With its catchy hip hop rhythm and rap verses, the song just a super fun vibe all around. Every member of the group shines in their respective spotlight. What else can we say? Feast your ears and bop to the the beat.

#5. Angkat

We’re wrapping up this list with “Angkat”, only because it is way too iconic not to be included. The beat! The choreography! The representation! What a comeback. “Angkat” shook the public to the core. Mimi is back and hotter than ever, with a brand new sound but still keeping to her roots.
