The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that several local celebrities will soon be summoned for questioning over their involvement in the high-profile Op Sky investigation. This revelation comes as MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki disclosed that these celebrities allegedly received substantial payments to endorse a financial consultancy firm now implicated in a massive loan fraud syndicate.
According to news by Berita Harian as reported in Fmt the celebrities in question pocketed payments ranging from RM150,000 to RM400,000 over one to two years. These transactions, backed by financial records and witness statements, suggest that the endorsements played a role in promoting the firm's credibility.
The syndicate not only roped in celebrities but also went to the extent of sponsoring concerts and commissioning custom-written songs to mask its illicit operations.
Bank Officers and Company Directors in Custody
The Op Sky operation has already resulted in the arrest of 27 individuals, including eight company directors and 18 bank officers. These arrests stem from allegations that bribed banking institution officials facilitated and expedited personal loan applications for the financial consultancy company. MACC’s anti-money laundering division, in collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia, has been actively dismantling the network behind this sophisticated fraud scheme.
The financial consultancy firm allegedly manipulated loan approval turnaround times, misleading clients into believing it had an upper hand in securing loans. To bolster its public image, the company strategically engaged celebrities and artistes as official ambassadors.
These public figures, in turn, endorsed the firm’s services, lending it an air of legitimacy that drew unsuspecting customers into the syndicate’s web.
Frozen Assets and Raids Across Klang Valley
As part of the crackdown, MACC has frozen RM22 million in assets linked to the case, spanning 98 bank accounts across six banks. The operation also saw raids on 24 locations, including residential properties and corporate offices across the Klang Valley.
Azam Baki has assured that investigations will continue to expose the full extent of the syndicate’s operations and to determine the level of complicity of those involved, including celebrities who may have unknowingly or knowingly aided the fraudulent scheme.
The Celebrities' Role: Unwitting Victims or Willing Participants?
The involvement of public figures in fraudulent schemes raises significant concerns about ethical responsibilities and accountability. Were these celebrities mere pawns in a well-orchestrated con, or were they complicit in misleading the public? As MACC prepares to question them, the entertainment industry is bracing for potential fallout, with reputations on the line.
With the scandal widening, Malaysians will be closely watching the developments in Op Sky, awaiting answers and, more importantly, justice for those deceived by the syndicate’s fraudulent tactics.
