I can still remember when I take what I've learned decades ago in school into the corporate field, I continue to learn through on-the-job experience and by watching my bosses, peers and subordinates. Operational assignments provide opportunities to broaden my knowledge and refine the skills I gain during institutional training and previous assignments. I gain and expand my experience base by performing a wide range of duties and tasks under a variety of frequently changing conditions & situations. Operational assignments provide powerful resource for leader development, an opportunity to learn by doing

As such, I accepted the invite from my uncle, Lt. Colonel Dato' Nawawi Mat Desa (Retired) to attend a meeting with his former Malaysian Armed Forces officers, alumni of Federation Military College (FMC) & Royal Military College (RMC) at Old Putera Association (OPA) Headquarters. Ten of them agreed to join the taskforce in welcoming & ushering guests attending Dato' Nawawi's son Aizat wedding reception at Dewan Perdana FELDA on 28 December. (https://www.opa.org.my)

From their deliberations in this meeting, I found each and every effective person focuses on contribution. They politely asked Dato' Nawawi, “What can I contribute that will significantly affect the performance and success of your event?” Everyone stress is on responsibility, contribution & effectiveness.

I concur with them that the focus on contribution is the key to effectiveness: in one's own work (its content, its level, its standards, and its impact) in one's relations with others (with superiors, associates, subordinates), and in the use of the tools of the executive such as meetings or reports. Whether he or she works in a business or in hospital, in a government agency or in non government organization (NGO), in a university or in the army, an entrepreneur or staff is, first of all, expected to get the right things done. This means simply that each & every entrepreneur or professional is expected to be highly effective.
