Ahead of the impending nationwide exodus for the Chinese New Year celebrations, over 6,000 traffic police officers are poised to enhance road safety across Malaysia. This strategic deployment, part of Operation Selamat 21, will commence from February 8th to 13th, focusing notably on 64 high-risk areas identified along highways.
Heading this initiative is the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) of Bukit Aman, with a total deployment of 6,559 officers across the nation. Director Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri emphasized the suspension of all personnel leave to ensure the seamless execution of Operation Selamat, themed 'JSPT's Presence Felt'. To bolster efforts, motorcycle patrols will be intensified to deter burglaries in vacant homes and property thefts during the festive period.
"With the anticipated surge in vehicular traffic, particularly during the return journey, heightened vigilance is imperative," Mohd Azman remarked during an appearance on the 'Selamat Pagi Malaysia' program aired by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).
Regarding safety measures, Mohd Azman highlighted the identification of 547 hotspot and blackspot locations nationwide. Among these, 18 hotspot and 46 blackspot areas are situated along highways, while roads in various states and districts account for 407 hotspot and 76 blackspot locations. Blackspots denote areas witnessing more than three fatal accidents, while hotspots signify congested zones.
Encouraging public participation in ensuring safety, Mohd Azman urged citizens to utilize the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application. This initiative aims to gather crucial information before embarking on journeys during the festive season, aiding law enforcement in deploying officers effectively. Additionally, regular patrols by the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) will be conducted to deter community crimes.
Operation Selamat 21 underscores the commitment of Malaysian authorities to safeguarding citizens during the festive period. Through strategic deployment, enhanced patrols, and public engagement initiatives, efforts are underway to mitigate road risks and ensure a safe and joyful celebration of the Chinese New Year across the nation.
