Operations at Munich Airport were resuming late Sunday after being suspended earlier in the evening because smoke was detected, a spokesman for the airport operator said.
The airport website indicated that delays and restrictions could still occur.
The airport had previously announced that operations had been temporarily suspended. "The [control] tower at Munich Airport was evacuated at 8:33 p.m. [1833 GMT] due to the smell of smoke. German Air Traffic Control (DFS) has suspended flight operations until further notice. More information will follow," read a notice on its website.
However, around two hours later, some flights were already taking off again.
Police initially told dpa that the situation was unclear and that the fire brigade was assessing the situation.
A spokesman said it was not a fire, and no flames were visible. “We don’t know exactly yet.” He said he could not provide further details.
According to the police spokesman, flight operations had been "partially" suspended.
The online flight schedule late Sunday did not indicate that operations had been completely suspended. There were some delays in arrivals and departures, with some flights reportedly being diverted. However, according to the flight schedule, check-ins were still taking place.
The airport spokesman said it was not yet clear how many flights had been affected in total. The display boards at the airport were still showing many delayed flights even in the evening.
The cause of the smell of burning was not yet known.
In a European comparison, Munich Airport ranks eighth among Europe’s largest airports in terms of flight movements, as stated in Munich Airport’s 2025 Annual Statistical Report.
