When I first read the headline that MIC was planning to contest in Sabah, I didn’t even bother putting on my analyst cap. Instead, I laughed and laughed and started thinking of one-liners to describe how utterly comical the idea was. MIC, the party that can barely keep its own head above water in Semenanjung, suddenly dreams of planting its flag in Sabah? The headline alone was enough to send my humour circuits into overdrive.

Here are the 8 jokes that I could think of to describe how laughable I think the prospect is.

  1. MIC wanting to contest in Sabah is like asking the bank for a 10,000 ringgit loan, getting rejected, and then filling up a form to ask for a 1 million ringgit loan.
  2. It is like trying to pick up a 20kg dumbbell at the gym right after you fail to pick up a 10kg dumbbell.
  3. It is like dreaming of owning a Ferrari just as the repo guys are towing away your MyVi.
  4. It is like hearing the story of Angan-angan Mat Jenin, and instead of learning the lesson, finding yourself inspired.
  5. It is like “having stomach ache, and instead of rushing to toilet and relieve yourself, you set out to the world straight.”
  6. It is like thinking you are “showing the way when you are running away.”
  7. It is like imagining that you “see the light just because you feel the heat.”
  8. It is to believe that “you are the chosen one just because you are shunned."

Anyway, this entire joke about MIC wanting to stand in Sabah was started by its vice-president T. Murugiah, who recently remarked that the party might one day contest in Sabah to represent the Indian community.

Murugiah, who heads the MIC Sabah chapter, said if Chinese-based peninsular parties could contest in the state, MIC should be allowed to do the same.

He also said MIC could consider “joining a party” to ensure the welfare and needs of Indians in Sabah were met.

A few analysts have given their two cents’ worth on why they think the idea is preposterous — you can read it here if you want — but I myself am not even going to bother to take it seriously by giving it any analysis. Instead, I am just satisfied to share with you the jokes it sparked.
