Now that the six state elections are over, I believe the various political parties will be doing their post-mortem and analysing where they have gone wrong and what they have done right. As for the rakyat, we want to see a stable government, investments coming in to revive our economy as well as solutions to curb the rising costs of living.
I hope all our parliamentarians will take their responsibilities very seriously and fulfil their oaths as they have been sworn into parliament. I hope both the Unity Government as well as those in the opposition will unite and uphold the interests and well-being of the rakyat instead of having any other agendas. Indeed, we can see many problems and shortcomings but we must be real and put our nation first before ourselves.
Our government has the responsibility of deciding how things are run in our country and various issues are discussed in our parliament. Parliament sessions must be open and transparent. The proposals brought up must be workable, fair and not discriminatory, as well as beneficial to the nation. So, for the government machinery to run smoothly, attendance in parliament is extremely important.
On the other hand, the Opposition's main role is to question the government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. By questioning and scrutinizing that which is brought up or proposed, the opposition helps to fix the mistakes of the Ruling Party. We have to bear in mind that as the Opposition in our parliament, the opposition is equally responsible for upholding the best interests of the people of the country and ensuring that the government does implement acts or policies, which might have negative effects on the people of the country.
So, after the six state elections, now what? Let us all buck up and not waste precious time or energy on the trivial. Let us choose to give due respect to all (the government of the day, the opposition bloc, and the rakyat who voted), make the welfare of our nation the top priority and work together to rebuild our nation. When the government is righteous, true and just, the rakyat will rejoice.
