Just as Rome was not built in a day, the fall of Rome began long before its leaders saw their world order was on its way out.
It is important that Anwar Ibrahim make sure transparency and accountability are fundamental parts of his government as the rakyat’s lack of trust in politicians and their ability to change things have deteriorated into a complete lack of trust in the country.
Many times, the rakyat questions the reliability, accountability and integrity of our leaders.
A nationwide study conducted by Ipsos Malaysia and published in January 2020 to understand how much trust Malaysians place in institutions like Government, media, bluechip companies as well as fellow citizens has revealed that Government & Media have the lowest trust levels among the citizens of Malaysia.
Anwar must listen to the people and stamp out the corruption which has crippled our economy. The rakyat hopes that he can do this, otherwise the country will fade into a shadow of its former self.
For a long time, the past leadership pretended to serve the interests of the people.
Each was alleged to have stolen taxpayers’ monies.
Each appeared to be out of touch with the problems the country and the people have.
Malaysians are no longer shocked by the revelations of corruptions uncovered.
Despite such discoveries, the lack of actions to recover the illicit gains and the dismissal of the cases on the grounds that the investigations were conducted shabbily are frustrating to the general public.
Rarely the public hear that these illicit gains were recovered. Even the recoveries from 1MDB were less than what were projected earlier.
The people want a country that is properly governed. The one where the utilization of its abundance of natural resources is for the benefit of the people and not for the elitist and the powerful.
Who can blame them when they see what it has become now?
When the power-elites can form a government without consulting the people, even though the people have made their decision known via their votes, it further pushed voters to become increasingly disillusioned, potentially resulting in the general population eventually losing all trust and confidence in the democracy allegedly practiced by our country.
The results from GE15 appeared to indicate that voters have lost faith in politicians and are turning to ideological politics.
Apart from their appeal to dark politics, these demagogues all have one thing in common: they have a following that the general population can’t pretend doesn’t exist.
People are frustrated and fed up. They don't trust the government when there are massive job losses and when the prices of essential items skyrocketed.
Even the 5G roll-out has been plagued with allegations that the government is favouring telecommunications companies rather than asking what the consumers think, need and want.
It is basic fundamental that a government must respect the people and take them seriously, not only those that have voted for them, but all people.
People’s faith and trust in the government will return if they see accountability and transparency being practiced.
For the last few decades, this country has not seen a government of the people, by the people and for the people. If it were, the core demands of every Malaysian would have been met decades ago.
