Today, one can argue that either one of the two Yamtuan Besars of Negeri Sembilan cannot properly be considered “royalty”.
Why do I think so ?
Well, it is because you can probably argue that because both Yamtuan Besars belong to feuding camps, and if one of the Yamtuan Besars is the legitimate Yamtuan Besar, then the other is not.
As to who is legitimate and who is not, it really depends on which camp you are on, doesn't it?
Considering the trajectory of their feud, we can most certainly predict that in the very near future, it is going to peak to the point where either one or both camps will belittle or demean the Yamtuan Besar of the rival camp.
What then?
Can the 3R laws be applied to those who criticise either one of the Yamtuan Besars when, in their view, the rival Yamtuan Besar they belittled or demeaned might not properly belong in the category of “royalty”?
Imagine if a police report is made by the camp that has been belittled or demeaned. Can the police take action? If they do, wouldn’t it amount to the police admitting that they consider the Yamtuan Besar of the party making the complaint to be the legitimate one? Wouldn’t such an admission put the police in an awkward position?
If the police are paralysed by this dilemma to the point that they are unable to take action, the negative campaigns that either or both sides launch against each other will normalise the idea that royalty can be addressed in a negative fashion.
Once you normalise this idea, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle.
We know this problem is coming.
So before it happens, it might be better if the authorities take preventive measures.
Some problems can only be resolved before they arise.
