In an age where global travel defines connectivity and cultural exchange, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) finds itself at the center of a political and moral storm.

Recently, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) Members of Parliament’s proposal to ban alcohol on MAS flights has been branded by Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh as “ignorant and short-sighted” - and rightly so. What seems like a moral crusade is, in truth, an economic blunder that risks undoing years of MAS’s recovery and tarnishing Malaysia’s global image.

For many flyers, a glass of wine or a cocktail mid-flight isn’t decadence - it’s part of the travel experience, a symbol of comfort and relaxation. Business travelers unwind; tourists indulge as part of their holiday. As long as no one’s causing trouble, why should anyone dictate their choices? MAS, as a full-service international carrier, caters not just to Malaysians but to passengers from all over the world. To impose a blanket ban for religious reasons is to alienate the very customers who keep the airline afloat.

Soon Koh is right - Malaysia Airlines doesn’t just represent Malaysia’s skies; it represents Malaysia’s economy. Competing against giants like Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar Airways, MAS cannot afford to strip itself of global-standard services. Alcohol sales contribute significantly to inflight and duty-free revenue. Remove them, and you cut into MAS’s thin profit margins, risk downgrading its premium appeal, and push loyal customers toward competitors.

The irony runs deep. While Middle Eastern airlines - based in Islamic countries - discreetly serve alcohol to international passengers, PAS MPs argue that MAS should swap wine for cendol or sirap bandung. It’s an amusing image - shaved ice at 35,000 feet - but also a logistical and economic nightmare. The dessert melt and make a mess; spirits don’t. Alcohol attracts high-flying passengers who seek relaxation, freedom, and indulgence during their travels. It has a long shelf life, high profit margins, and global appeal. Cendol, on the other hand, is a local dessert delight - it simply doesn’t fly internationally.

The larger problem, however, isn’t the dessert: it’s the mindset. PAS’s proposal mirrors the same regressive policies that turned Langkawi’s tourism from thriving paradise to struggling ghost town. Kedah’s alcohol clampdowns and moral policing under PAS rule scared away investors and tourists alike. The result? Billions lost annually, jobs gone, and reputational damage still lingering.

Religion, as Wong aptly reminded, is personal - not political. Turning Malaysia’s flag carrier into a moral experiment ignores our multicultural reality and the economic principles that sustain global aviation. Faith should inspire unity, not uniformity. Imposing one community’s standards on an international airline erodes Malaysia’s inclusive brand and stifles growth.

In the end, banning alcohol on MAS flights isn’t just a poor business decision: it’s national self-sabotage wrapped in moral pretense. Malaysia’s strength lies in its diversity, not in rigid moral dominance. If MAS is to soar again, it must compete globally, not bow to populist drama and religious pressure.

Let travelers choose their drink - be it wine, tea, or cendol. Because when politics dictates the beverage cart, it’s not faith that flies - it’s reason that crashes, taking our competitiveness and economy down with it.
