I think the Chinese, and non-Malays by extension, get what Chua Soi Lek is dog whistling at.
On a side note, Chua Soi Lek finding himself re-hired as MCA's war general for the coming state elections is reminding me of a Cormac McCarthy novel : "No country for Old Men". Whichever country that McCarthy was talking about , it is certainly not Malaysia, because if any country has been good to old men, it is definitely Malaysia.
That is why when Wee Ka Siong and MCA were looking for a war general, it is not the youths that it turned to, but past expiry date Chua Soi Lek that it selected.
Chua Soi Lek must be 80 years old.
From Chua to Anwar to Hadi to even 100 year old Mahathir, our country has certainly been very good to dinosaurs.
Either our country is good to dinosaurs, or MCA is so deprived of vigour and vitality, that the only people it has in its stable left are geriatrics.
Anyway, back to what Chua Soil Lek said.
According to Chua, the Chinese must "either vote or have Pas be the boss" to motivate the demotivated Chinese electorate to drag their feet and vote in the upcoming state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, rather than use the holiday, if the two states grant public holiday on voting day, to throw a barbecue and a karaoke party for friends and family.
Seeing that that Chinese are disenchanted with DAP, Chua is probably hoping that if he can just motivate the Chinese to queue up to cast their vote, the only option that the disenchanted Chinese will have left at the ballot box is MCA.
I must say that Chua's thought processes are not without merit.
If you had to choose between someone who disappointed you, someone who is against you or someone who you hold in contempt, your best choice might indeed be the one you hold in contempt.
But I feel the flaw in Chua's argument is that while the Chinese are indeed disappointed with DAP , they haven't yet given up on DAP.
Their loathing for MCA however, looks quite well defined and concrete.
So when given the choice between DAP that disappointed them, MCA that they loath and PN that they are against, I believe that their choice will still be between DAP and not voting.
Either there or they might just vote for Bersama, to encourage Bersama to continue on in its political journey by making them not lose their deposit.
MCA's only real chance of winning in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state election is if the BN chapters in these states create their own distinct identity, that is separate from the national level MCA and Umno leadership.
If under Onn Ghazi, for example, Johor BN does create a Bangsa Johor identity, then yes, MCA might have a chance to win.
So rather than play poker with the voters, maybe what 80 year old Chua Soi Lek should do, is enunciate to the voters that a vote for BN Johor is a vote for Bangsa Johor, instead of asking them to give MCA another chance if they find DAP lacking.
Someday, maybe MCA might be able to win back the Chinese vote on its own merit, but that day is certainly not today.
