Malaysia’s deputy foreign minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin has urged opposition MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal not to be “more Hamas than Hamas” following criticism over the government’s decision to invite US President Donald Trump to the upcoming 47th Asean Summit. The fiery exchange took place after Wan Fayhsal slammed the move, accusing the government of welcoming a “war criminal” responsible for enabling genocide in Gaza.
“There has never been an American president who stopped Israeli aggression. Trump is the one who let genocide happen. What do we stand to gain by allowing him to set foot in our country?” the Bersatu MP for Machang asked during the Dewan Rakyat session.
In response, Mohamad defended Malaysia’s decision, emphasizing that the invitation was extended not in isolation, but in the country’s role as Asean chair. “We must view this matter from a broader perspective,” he said, stressing Asean’s principles of neutrality and centrality in global diplomacy. He further reminded that the United States remains Malaysia’s top foreign investor - a relationship that must be managed pragmatically rather than emotionally.
“Hamas itself has welcomed Trump’s 20-Point Peace Plan. So why can’t we support it? Machang, let’s not try to be more Hamas than Hamas,” he remarked, drawing laughter in the House.
Trump’s proposed 20-Point Peace Plan, announced on September 29, 2025, outlines an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and prisoners, and a transitional administration under international oversight. It also promises large-scale humanitarian aid and reconstruction but falls short of guaranteeing Palestinian statehood - a point that has drawn mixed global reactions.
Mohamad acknowledged the plan’s flaws, saying Malaysia would support any effort that could stop the bombings and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “We will use Trump’s visit to voice our concerns, to push for genuine peace, and to strengthen Malaysia’s standing with both Asean and the United States,” he added.
His remarks underline the government’s pragmatic balancing act - standing firm with Palestine while engaging constructively with global powers. For Malaysia, diplomacy remains a bridge, not a battlefield.
