Former Tabung Haji (TH) chairman Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim is expected to be charged in court on 9th September over the Tabung Haji saga.

Honestly, I hope the prosecution knows what it is doing.

Not because I have any particular sympathy for Azeez. And certainly not because I think politicians should get a special discount when it comes to accountability.

Quite the opposite.

If there is evidence that he abused his position, then by all means, charge him. Put the evidence before the court and let the court decide.

But please, make sure you have the evidence first - because Malaysians are getting a little tired of the same storyline:

First comes the arrest.

Then the dramatic headlines.

Then the handcuffs.

Then the remand.

Then everyone gets excited because finally, FINALLY, someone is going to be held accountable.

And then… plot twist. Not enough evidence. Case closed. Person released. Everyone goes home. And we are left wondering whether we just watched a crime drama or the trailer for one.

This is particularly important in the Tabung Haji case because we are not talking about some minor administrative misunderstanding.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Tabung Haji's management between 2014 and 2020 reportedly found problematic investments, suspicious transactions and concealed information. It also recommended a forensic audit into investment decisions that contributed to a significant decline in the institution's asset value.

These are serious allegations involving an institution that millions of Malaysians entrust with their money.

So if the investigation has now reached the stage of charging a former chairman, I would like to believe the prosecution has done its homework.

Not “We have some questions.”

Not “We are still investigating.”

Not “Let's charge first and see what happens.”

I mean actual evidence. Evidence that can stand up in court – because if you charge someone, you owe the public a serious attempt to prove the case.

We don't need another spectacular opening followed by a disappointing ending. We have enough Netflix subscriptions.

What Malaysians want is accountability. And accountability means more than putting someone's name in the headlines and then quietly discovering that the evidence isn't quite there.

If the evidence isn't there, don't manufacture a courtroom drama for public consumption.

I sincerely hope this isn't another case where Malaysians spend months following the story only to discover that the evidence went missing somewhere between the arrest and the courtroom.

Because after all the allegations surrounding Tabung Haji, Malaysians deserve a proper investigation, a proper prosecution, and eventually, a proper answer.

Not another season finale that ends with: “Insufficient evidence. Thanks for watching.”
