Malaysian politics will become increasingly race and religion-centric in the quest for Malay votes.
Political commentator, former teacher, and lawyer Kandiah Chelliah said in his analysis, “It seems the Madani Government will go all out to safeguard, spread, and protect the Islamic faith and allow their preachers and politicians a free hand in propagating racist sentiments.
“As it can be observed, nothing much is being done by our Chinese and Indian MPs in the Unity Government to counter religious and racist attacks on the community.
“It is notable that the leadership in PKR, DAP, UMNO, and others in the Unity Government are struggling to capture Malay Muslim votes because PAS and PN made big gains in GE 15 in getting Malay Muslim votes in Peninsular. Umno lost heavily, while DAP is shoring up support for PH in the Unity Government.
“What’s shocking is that these parties have been silent on the KK mart issue,” Kandiah added.
According to other observers, many political parties refrained from getting involved in the socks issue because of the attitude: “Let barking dogs bark and possibly bark up the wrong tree. The UMNO youth chief could have had a political agenda to upstage its current leadership.”
Noting the racist type political developments, Kandiah said: “The unity government is allowing Dr Akmal to secure more Malay Muslim votes and support. UMNO probably wants to finish off Bersatu, as PAS is too strong, and its members are unwavering. Umno seeks to restore its former power glory and rule the country.”
Kandiah observed that while Muslim leaders were waging animosity against Non-Muslims in Malaysia, the Middle Eastern countries' rulers were committed to finding peace and harmony among all races in their countries.
“I salute the Rulers of the UAE who promoted extraordinary, unimaginable religious harmony and peace by allocating land for a Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi.
“The Harmony Festival in the Hindu temple exemplified the harmony of religions, and mankind should live in a religiously peaceful and harmonious world. The UAE is a model for world peace, tolerance, and goodwill. Malaysia was once a model for racial tolerance in the world but has dropped in its ratings now,” Kandiah added.
