If Donald Trump wins in the presidential election this coming November, one high profile personality that he can expect to serve under him is Elon Musk, who with a net worth of USD 250 billion, is the richest person in the world.
In response to Trump saying that he might consider offering the Tesla and SpaceX CEO an advisory role within his administration, the latter responded with a post on X, which he also owns, with a post that read, "I am willing to serve."
In the post, Musk will appear standing in front of a podium with the term "Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is both a nod to Dogecoin, the popular cryptocurrency and an indication that Musk is interested to transform the US administration into a lean and mean fighting machine.
Musk is no stranger to taking over a new organisation and revamping it, and to achieve his goals, he is not afraid of firing most of its employees.
After taking over Twitter in 2022, he famously fired more than 6000 of Twitter’s staff, which accounted for more than 80% of the total workforce, in a move that shocked the whole social media industry. Despite that, Twitter, or X, which he renamed not long after, is still functioning with the same level of functionality and efficiency today.
The jury is still out on whether Musk will execute a similar move if indeed Trump wins the next election, and Musk is elected to improve the efficiency of the US government.
The possibility that Musk might serve on a Trump cabinet emerged earlier this Monday, at a campaign in Pennsylvania, when Trump had mentioned that if he returns to the White house, he might abolish a $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicle (EV) purchases.
Elon Musk is a major figure in the EV industry, on account of being the founder and CEO of Tesla, which is the biggest EV company in the world.
Last week, Elon Musk also interviewed Donald Trump on the X platform, which received an astronomical 95 million views. This move was seen as a move that favours the Trump campaign, for Trump's campaign has not been getting favorable coverage in most mainstream US media. Musk has also not extended the same opportunity to Trump's rival, Kamala Harris.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk is also reportedly planning to donate USD $45 million a month to a Super Pac focused on electing Donald Trump, starting in July.
After taking over Twitter in 2022, one of the first things that Elon Musk did was reinstate Trump back into Twitter, after Trump had earlier been banned from the platform by the old Twitter management in 2021.
Considering Musk’s gestures towards Trump, it was not surprising that Trump was eager to reciprocate the gesture, by abolishing the tax credit for electric vehicle (EV) purchases, whose beneficiary will most likely be Musk.
"Tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing," Trump said after the campaign event in Pennsylvania and when asked about the possibility of having Elon Musk serve in his administration, Trump would unequivocally reply: "He's a very smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would. He's a brilliant guy."
It was in response to this remark that Musk would later on post his "I am willing to serve" remark on X.
Although Musk, who has recently come out very strongly to endorse Trump as president, has not yet committed to take on a role in the Trump administration in a serious manner, his post on X has sparked speculation about his potential involvement in a future Trump administration.
There is a Chinese saying, “One mountain cannot contain two tigers,” to indicate that you cannot have two larger than life personalities like Trump and Musk in the same organisation.
It is also hard to see how Musk will be willing to give up his positions on Tesla, SpaceX and X to serve in a Trump cabinet.
However, if Trump and Musk do finally end up working together after the November elections next year, one thing is for certain, the share prices for Electric vehicle companies and the value of cryptocurrencies are sure to skyrocket.
