In Malaysian politics, there are brotherly comebacks - such as that between Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Dato' Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - and then there are certified comebacks, from lingering criminal woes to full legal freedom. Zahid Hamidi’s journey from DNAA to NFA now reads less like a legal saga and more like a probationary drama series that has finally received its happy-ending stamp: “Settled once and for all, cannot be charged again, that is it lah.”

With those immortal words from Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, the curtain officially fell on the Yayasan Akalbudi case. Forty-seven charges, once serious enough for the High Court to call Zahid to enter his defence, have now dissolved into what can best be described as administrative mist. The result? A political figure who once closed his ears to public stigma and tiptoed cautiously now walks freely, hands in pockets, surveying the coalition marketplace.

For the uninitiated, Zahid first received a DNAA - Discharge Not Amounting to Acquittal - in 2023. Think of it as being let out of class but told to stand by the door, just in case the teacher changes their mind. A DNAA means the charges could return. You are free, but not totally free.

Now comes the upgrade: NFA - No Further Action. This is not a pause button. It is the end of his evasive and silent legal show. The Attorney General has exercised powers under Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, declaring the case closed, sealed, laminated, and filed under “Do Not Reopen.” Zahid, we are told, cannot be charged again on the same matter. Permanently. Final. Once and for all.

The explanation is technical but elegant: further investigations were “very comprehensive,” money flows were reviewed, circumstances changed, and the once-solid prima facie case was, in Dusuki’s own words, “diluted.” In short, the prosecution’s earlier confidence aged like expired milk left too long untouched - no longer fit for court consumption.

Naturally, questions followed. How does a case strong enough to survive prosecution suddenly lose its spine? The answer, according to the AGC, lies in new facts. And, as history reminds us, facts - much like political friendships - are dynamic in the power game.

With legal worries now officially retired, Zahid appears liberated to focus on what he does best: politics. Almost immediately, hints emerged that Umno and Bersatu - once bitter rivals trading statutory declarations like Pokemon cards - could be back in conversation. Zahid, ever the pragmatist, said strategies would be devised “if it really happens”. Translation: nothing is off the table anymore.

Convenient timing? Perhaps. But in Malaysian politics, coincidence is a luxury word.

Bersatu, weakened by internal turmoil, resignations, sackings and suspensions, now finds itself being courted - or at least a hint of survey - by a Umno president freshly cleared of legal baggage. When the probation ends, networking begins.

Zahid’s story is not just about law; it is about momentum. DNAA kept him cautious. NFA sets him free. And with freedom comes options - alliances, recalibrations, and second chances.

In Malaysia, redemption is not declared at the ballot box alone. Sometimes, it arrives quietly, after “very comprehensive investigations”, with a simple phrase: No further action.
