Contrary to what many people believe, religious conversion does not have as much to do with divinity, as it does with stress reduction. Most people do not change religions because they heard God or saw angels. Most people simply convert in the hopes that the new them will be happier and less distressed than the old them. Seeing so, I must say that I have a lot of doubts as to whether Ridhuan’s religious — and perhaps even racial — conversion has yielded the results he hoped for, because from his behaviour and expressions, it appears to me that Ridhuan's stress has increased rather than diminished.
Just last week, Ridhuan was complaining about the Chinese community using Chinese-language banners for the Hungry Ghost Festival in Ampang, as they have been doing for generations, decades and perhaps even centuries. A couple of days ago, Ridhuan again found fault with his old community by suggesting that Chinese leaders in Sarawak were pushing for a “Chinese university” in East Malaysia and that such an institution could undermine national unity. Ridhuan’s tirade so confounded Miri MP Chiew Choon Man that Chiew would even exasperatedly ask: “What exactly is his problem?”
It was almost as if Chiew could not fathom what was eating Ridhuan Tee from the inside. For me, the answer is simple. Perhaps Ridhuan’s problem is that his conversion has not brought him the peace, success and happiness that he had expected, but he has not yet given up on it. What I mean is that although Ridhuan may find himself unhappy, failing or distressed after his conversion, he may still believe that if he perseveres and keeps his faith, he will eventually find happiness, success and peace.
