Last week's innovative program "INNOVATHON" on Astro AEC featured a team called MYCRS, which focused on researching and developing solutions for the problem of substandard construction practices. During the program, they revealed how some contractors may manipulate the quality inspection of cement during the construction of buildings, leading to fatal defects in the final product (our homes). This caught my attention and made me question the structural integrity of my own house.

I consulted an engineer friend about this issue, and the response was shocking and alarming. My engineer friend confirmed that such cost-cutting practices in cement structures do exist, and due to the heavy reliance on human supervision during inspections, it becomes incredibly difficult to detect. Human wills can be influenced by personal interests or pressure, and there are those who benefit from these manipulations, while homebuyers are the ones who suffer. It's truly disheartening.

According to my engineer friend, most industry professionals are aware that certain individuals hold control over these concrete quality manipulations. However, without concrete evidence or significant incidents, many turn a blind eye, and relying on the self-discipline and honesty of personnel proves to be an unreliable approach. Unfortunately, there seems to be no better solution within the industry to change the current state of affairs, until I discover this new tech from TV.

Reports suggest that the situation is deteriorating further, with contractors becoming more adept and audacious in their manipulations, resulting in an increasing number of structurally unsound houses and buildings. Is this the legacy we want to leave for the next generation? Shouldn't we confront and resolve these issues now to prevent calamities for future generations?

The team on the program mentioned that this Malaysian system has already gained recognition abroad for many years, yet it struggles to gain traction domestically. This reminded me of the story of Pendrive inventor Pua Khein-Seng, who created a globally-used product but needed foreign recognition to achieve success—a true shame for Malaysia.

In light of the existing structural issues, we must ask ourselves: Are we willing to let our family and children reside in houses with uncertain structural integrity? Can we truly feel at ease living in such homes?

In times of earthquakes, floods, or other dangers, can we rely on these houses? I am filled with doubts about the entire construction process—whether my purchased house is truly as sturdy as the developer claims or whether it has longstanding vulnerabilities, as indicated by the MYCRS team.

How exactly does our regulatory authority oversee these matters? Are we naively assuming that the integrity of our country's construction personnel surpasses that of other countries? During this election season, I loudly call on all candidates and political parties to seriously address the aforementioned issues and make efforts to resolve them, as they bear a responsibility for the nation. Let's utilize this valuable locally-developed system to rectify these vulnerabilities and provide all Malaysians with safe homes—a truly solid home for our future generations.
