Just a few days ago, I commented on the JB slapping incident. To my dismay, another case surfaced today. This time the victim was an apartment security guard who denied entry to a vehicle as it did not have the residents’ authorisation to enter the apartment building. It was really disappointing to note that the aggressor was another man who was supposed to be observing the virtues of the holy month of Ramadan.

During this month, Muslims worldwide observe fasting, communal prayer, spend time in reflection and community. They not only abstain from food and drink during the hours of fasting, but also from all behaviour deemed to be sinful in Islam. So, I presumed that our fellow Muslim friends who are fasting during this period would be extra patient or tolerant and understanding. To not cooperate with a guard doing his duty and then giving him a slap him is really shocking. Where has understanding or tolerance gone? Isn’t this the holy month?

Whatever our beliefs or faiths are, we are all testimonies to what we declare to have faith in. Our actions speak louder than our words, attires or titles. As finite human beings, we all often falter and fail. We speak the wrong words and do the wrong things at the wrong places or at the wrong time. We hurt and stumble others by our bad attitudes and testimonies. This is a fact in this fallen world that we live in. So, what should we do? Be humble enough to repent before God and man. Show your sincerity in repentance by compensating those whom you have mistreated.

Regardless of age or creed, our learning curves continue. May we humbly take every experience in life as a learning curve to do better in love, kindness and respect. When we make an intentional choice to do that, we will surely build a more harmonious Malaysia.

God bless Malaysia!
