I’m a regular user of the multi-storey parking lot in SS15. However, I find it odd that this facility does not offer public parking lots for motorcycles, to an extent, it is scarce in said city.
As I walk to campus, I occasionally come across motorcycles revving along the pavement as motorcyclists make their way towards the main road. Since then, I always have to keep in mind the dangers of collisions.
According to TRP, many point out motorists parking on pavements or obstructing pedestrians in general stems from being inconsiderate while others point out that there is a lack of parking spaces in cities.
As there are millions of vehicles travelling from one place to another, I learned that designating parking spots is a short-term solution while posing a bigger problem in the long run.
Although it is convenient for motorists, it can increase the demand for vehicles. Therefore, this worsens the congestion in Klang Valley.
In the TRP report, X user, @SakhrilMarat mentioned in a tweet last year that there are insufficient spaces despite availability. He pointed out that there are “3,287,081 registered motorcycles in Klang Valley alone” but there are only “300 spots for motorcycles on average in malls”.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke in a New Straits Times report last December, said “There are more than 36.3 million vehicles registered, exceeding the country’s population”.
Loke said the ministry has introduced “initiatives such as the My50 unlimited monthly pass through Prasarana and free travel pass for people with disabilities and school students for KTM Komuter” to promote public transportation usage.
Loke added that the Klang Valley rail network “will widen in a few years”. Currently, the ministry is working closely with “local authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the use of micromobility vehicles” such as Beam e-scooters, e-bicycles, etc.

Although Beam e-scooters have been around, there is still needed for special lanes dedicated to these vehicles in several cities. However, some motorists double park on these lanes, this is apparent in Kuala Lumpur.
Would stricter enforcement prevent motorists from double parking on the road or parking on pavements?
According to New Straits Times, some motorists in Cyberjaya who were fined mentioned that authorities should be tolerant as the lack of parking spaces has led them to park on the roadside to purchase necessities.
This issue stems from weak connectivity for the public to travel from A to B and it has been aggravated by decades of poor urban planning. As a result, cars are perceived as the easiest method of transportation.
The government has to present initiatives to improve connectivity, accessibility and safety for both motorists and pedestrians alike. Meanwhile, we as motorists, have to ensure that we are being mindful to others such that we do not cause inconvenience as well.
