UMNO held its supreme council meeting on the 8th of December at their headquarters, it was also their first after a new lease of hope and in remaining relevant in politics under PM Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership. Some very strange and hot news grabbed the media’s attention.

Rosmah’s attendance

Rosmah, the wife of the ex-PM, was seen at the Umno HQ. While trying to move faster than the shutters of the cameras, she insisted that ‘no photos to be taken’. We already know that she had lost all her handbags but still wonder if she still had a handle on the party and had UMNO in the bag.

Absent & sacked

The two supremos and party vice-presidents who did not attend the meeting were Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

The hot news was that some very prominent leaders were expelled from the party due to disciplinary reasons. Something quite strategically executed only after UMNO got on dry land after being almost sunk in the rough seas of GE15.

Tan Sri Annuar Musa and possibly Datuk Seri Shamsiah Yasin and Datin Seri Fatimah Kassim were sacked for voicing out their distrust and disgust against Zahid Hamidi. Remarks made by the Ketereh MP that Zahid Hamidi was ‘dragging the party into the longkang’ and ignoring the opinion of the grassroots to hold discussions with PH to form a coalition got him the boot.

It should be noted that Annuar Musa, the UMNO loyalist, stood his grounds and remained in the party until he's being removed - unlike other MPs who jumped ship and contested in GE15 against the party. Annuar Musa was quite vocal about the humiliating and the worst-ever-defeat of BN in the election which he claimed was caused by the ill reputation of the party president owing to the myriad of corruption charges.

Post mortem of going to the Longkang claim

Why is it necessary to hold Umno elections only within 6 months after the GE and not as how it is usually done?

Why were some prominent and popular candidates already having the Rakyat’s mandate removed as contestants in the GE15?

Why was Khairy Jamaludin taken out from Rembau and made to look for a place to stand even though he was well liked by all Malaysians?

Why did Zaid Hamidi win by only a slim majority of 348 votes in Bagan Datuk? Were the people losing confidence in the UMNO President?

Will UMNO choose another leader in the coming elections?

We will know the answers in due time.
