Dr Mahathir again launched a broadside against the Malay community warning them that they will lose their ancestral land ("Tanah Melayu") and become stateless if they do not maintain absolute political and demographic dominance.
An absolute majority is defined as more than half (50% plus one) of the total eligible voters, total members, or total valid votes cast.
Absolute political dominance?
Absolute generally means complete, total.
Meaning Malay must have all the 222 seats in Parliament?
While the Parliament of Malaysia does not officially record MPs strictly by race in its public database, post-election demographic analyses indicate that approximately 143 to 145 out of the 222 Members of Parliament are Malay. This makes up around 64% to 65% of the total Dewan Rakyat.
Demographic dominance?
Malay accounted for 58.3% of the population in the first quarter 2026 as compared to 58.2% in the first quarter 2025.
The proportion of Other Bumiputera and Indians remained unchanged at 12.3% and 6.5%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Chinese decreased to 22.1% in the first quarter 2026 from 22.2% in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
Other Bumiputera consists of Sabah Bumiputera, Sarawak Bumiputera and other Bumiputera Peninsular Malaysia.
If every race remains status quo, Malay will still have demographic dominance at 58.3%.
Whichever way one look at the demographics, Malay will continue to remain the demographic dominance for many many many more years to come.
No other races will ever come close to overcoming that dominance on their own.
How does a population, who are the majority race in this country – approximately 70% - lose this country or become a minority in their own country?
A population typically loses its majority status or a country's control through shifts in demographics, legal changes, or geopolitical restructuring.
These shifts are driven by sustained disparities in birth and death rates, prolonged mass immigration or emigration, territorial annexation, or legal redefinitions of citizenship and statehood.
Populations become minorities or lose their majority standing through three primary processes:
- Demographic Shifts (Births, Deaths, and Migration): Populations naturally shrink or grow depending on birth rates, mortality rates, and net migration.
If an indigenous or majority population experiences low birth rates alongside an aging demographic, while simultaneously experiencing high levels of immigration or high birth rates from other groups, the majority's proportional representation in the total population decreases
- Geopolitical and Territorial Changes: A country can lose its population or control through border alterations.
If a nation cedes territory, or if an empire/state dissolves and breaks into smaller entities, a previously dominant demographic group may find itself partitioned into a new, smaller nation where it becomes a minority.
- Legal and Political Restructuring: A population can effectively lose a country through the erosion of sovereignty.
This happens through colonization, foreign occupation, or forced assimilation policies that strip the native population of self-determination.
Additionally, changing legal frameworks for citizenship can revoke voting rights or formally reclassify demographics.
Obviously, Dr Mahathir’s warning to the Malay is built on a foundation of logic.
Presently, a lot of logical and peace loving Malaysians and those who love this country and its diversity would like to understand where you’re coming from so that we can have a relationship where there is less tension.
