In a New York courtroom, a businessman was denied the presenting of his artificial intelligence (AI) generated video for his oral argument—not because of the AI’s presence, but because he failed to notify the court in advance.
So, does that mean one day AI representative is possibly allowed in court trials?
Well, a technology company has already tested the water of AI lawyer service. But rather than winning court cases, the company itself got fined a hefty $193,000 for its “misleading marketing”. (Guess their AI lawyers failed to defend themselves, oops!)
But, how wonderful is the idea of having AI to be your representative lawyer? Let’s look at the potential benefits:
Processing rate: AI lawyer can scan through volumes of legal documents and court cases much faster than any human attorney’s reading speed.
Analytical power: AI lawyer can analyse your case critically to find your best argument point and even attack your opponent’s weak spots.
Emotion stability: AI lawyer is always calm and unprovoked; it knows how to manipulate humans’ emotions but would not let itself be affected by the emotions.
All in all, simple; this sounds like the perfect lawyer who boosts the odds of you triumphing in the court case.
Even more controversially, some argued that AI lawyers are immune to the industry’s ethical dilemmas; defending and pledging for murderers, rapists, corrupted politicians or other outlaws.
As my AI partner declared, AI needs not to bear any moral consciousness in being an optimised legal weapon to serve its clients the best.

However, it is also concerned with how the landscape of law and justice would be under the play of AI.
Will the law be reduced to nothing more than a strategy game to be won by the more intelligent, resourceful and powerful side? Or does justice still have its nobility to be upheld in society?
Well, many human lawyers have already taken the ethically dubious path, colluding with the guilty outlaws because that is where the big money comes from. Maybe it is we humans who need AI to remind us what justice was meant to be.
