Recently, P Gunasegaram shared his opinion on How Anwar can power the ringgit. It was a very frank and well-presented article. Mr P Gunasegaram emphasized the need for long-term political commitment to do what it takes, putting the right people in place as well as unrelenting and scrupulous implementation.
Interestingly, a spectrum of comments came in reflecting the sentiments of the rakyat. I hope our Prime Minister Anwar take some time to reflect on this with his cabinet of ministers. I must agree with a comment that ‘PMX is no magician’. He is one man trying to put things right for the nation. He has been given this window of time to prove himself as a leader for all Malaysians, regardless of creed or colour. He has to prove to all who thinks that he is obsessed to remain in power wrong by doing the right thing. He has to bring political stability back so that foreign investments flow in.
Unfortunately for Mr Anwar, he inherited a nation that is at a very bad shape, laden by enormous debts caused by corruption of her leaders through the decades. In some ways his hands are tied due to the need to please all in our first unity government. Can PMX alone fix our crippled nation? Can PMX together with a handful of competent ministers and deputies do it?
I believe it is a real uphill battle. In any place, the righteous, selfless and courageous is always a tiny minority. This minority has to use every ounce of their emotional and mental strength to maintain their principles of truth, righteousness and justice in order to push back all that is wrong. So, let us as the rakyat, be quick to look out for such men and women and spur them on in their battle and encourage them in whatever way we can – whisper a prayer for them, write them a note of encouragement or simply say, “Thank You for serving,” if you happen to bump into them.
To put the nation right, I believe the opposition block also has a part to play. For the past year or so, more time has been focused on wrong things. Instead of providing constructive checks and balances through parliamentary debates, much time has been wasted on the trivial like dress code, Swatch watches and personal attacks on some. If only, all had been united to put the welfare of Malaysia above every personal agenda…if only all had the aim of putting Malaysia before self, our nation would definitely have gained some ground.
The truth hurts and not many has the courage to admit it. I believe a number of our leaders realize that they are unfit, unqualified for their positions of authority. They are what we call square pegs in round holes. The rakyat can easily identify them. I am sure PMX and many other leaders realize that too. I hope those who are square pegs in round holes will have the courage and humility to step down so that others who are more capable can take over. Please do not choose to stay in your position because of your salary and perks. Be true to your conscience. You can only achieve true fulfillment when you are doing what you are cut for. Being what and where you are not meant to be only add to unnecessary stress and distress.
May all our leaders be granted the wisdom to understand what needs to be done, the courage to always do the right thing and the perseverance to complete their tasks well.
God bless Malaysia!
