PAS wishes all Christians in Malaysia a Merry Christmas, the party’s Secretary General posted in a statement.
What about the prohibition by the then-PAS Youth chief in 2018 for Muslims from offering the traditional “Merry Christmas” greeting, equating the festivity with idolatry?
The then PAS Youth Chief is no ordinary member.
He is the son of the party’s President.
With the greetings this year, does it mean the party is reversing its earlier stance?
Or the public is to ignore and disregard the earlier prohibition issued in 2018?
Clearly, there are some quarters in the party construing and appropriating this issue for their ascension and rise in the party’s hierarchy.
If PAS does not clarify and withdraw the prohibition made in 2018, it only served to confuse the ordinary rakyat further.
If not, the party could lose all credibility with the ordinary rakyat when the President is urging the party to attract more non muslims to support them so that they can win big in the 16th GE.
Moving forward, maybe the party should inform the public that only statements made by the party’s Secretary General are deemed the official stance of the party and all other statements issued are the views of the individuals concerned and not the official stance of the party.
Instead of just stating in his statement that the core of Islamic teachings which embraces bonds of a great human family, inclusive of all races, cultures and religions, legally and honourably, the Secretary General and PAS should, in practice, demonstrate that they are a fervent believer in religious harmony and Islam’s history of tolerance consistently.
This will go a long way for the non Muslims to understand, view and trust PAS as a principled party if they are sincere in their attempts to woo support from the non Muslims.
