Trust in the present unity government will be gone if the Pardons Board were to grant a pardon to Najib based solely on the publicly avowed reason of the sole dissenting judgment in his application to the Federal Courts for a review of his appeal.
And when trust collapses, the country fails.
Since Feb 2020, the country has been driven by a sustained period of moral convulsions.
Majority of the rakyat feel disgusted by the state of politics in the country.
Moral indignation is widespread.
Contempt for established power is intense and increasing by the days.
These are increasing moments of agitation, frenzy and accusations amongst the politicians.
Passion for the country was sorely missing.
In its place, there is increasing greed in the politicians to accumulate more power and wealth.
The pandemic merely accelerated the moral convulsion.
Flaws were exposed and fissures in the already fragile fabric holding our society together were filled up to the brim with fears, hatred and hate for each other.
A former leader continued to undermine the legitimacy of the country’s democracy threatening to incite a vicious national conflagration that would leave the country a charred and shattered nation if it succeeds.
Social trust crumbled and was revealed as more untrustworthy still at the height of the pandemic throughout the period from 2020 to 2021.
The leaders had a chance, post May 2018 to pull together as a nation and build trust.
They did not.
Feb 2020 has left the country a broken, alienated society caught in a distrust doom loop.
No one has any idea where things will end.
The rakyat sit blinking, battered, and shocked asking what kind of nation have we become?
The Baby Boomers grew up in an era of family stability, widespread prosperity, and cultural cohesion.
Today, the present and future generations enjoy none of that sense of security.
They are now living in a broken nation.
They grew up in a country where social media is vicious, failure in public institutions and fragile families.
Their view of the country is predicated on threats.
Destruction is everywhere.
Everyone was naïve to trust the politicians that they will stop and put an end to the endemic corruption ravaging the country.
Trust in institutions falling perpetually over the last decade was bad enough.
Hope the rakyat won’t lose faith in each other.
If that happens, the country really begins to fall apart.
Renewal is unimaginable.
