Throughout history, women who are shown in the media have had a big impact on how people see them and how women see themselves. The documentary "Miss Representation" is an immaculate portrayal of how the media has kept stereotypes about women alive and made it hard for women to make progress in life.

One huge issue has been that the media often only shows women in certain roles that focus on their looks, sexuality, and submissiveness, instead of showing their intelligence, leadership, and different skills. This affects how people see women and how women see themselves. Continuously seeing the same narrow and often unrealistic beauty standards all the time can make women feel flawed about themselves and even may lead to mental distress.

The documentary also demonstrates how the portrayal of women in the media impacts their representation in leadership and top positions. When the media rarely portrays women as leaders or experts, it creates the impression that these roles are not for women. This makes it difficult for girls to aspire to these roles, perpetuating gender inequality in the workplace. When women do not see themselves in powerful and diverse roles, it can discourage them from aspiring to high positions in their careers.

The media also often emphasizes women's appearance over their accomplishments, implying that a woman's value lies in her looks rather than her intellect or achievements. This can make them feel less confident and discourage them from pursuing jobs where they are evaluated based on their abilities rather than their appearance. It can also lead to women being treated unfairly at work and experiencing gender discrimination and harassment.

"Miss Representation" calls for a shift in how the media portrays women. The documentary aims to enhance people's media literacy and encourage them to critically analyze what they are exposed to. It seeks to empower individuals to challenge and transform negative stereotypes. The Representation Project, an initiative stemming from the documentary, continues this mission by advocating for more diverse and equitable media representation.

The way the media portrays women has a significant impact on gender equality and women's self-perception. By perpetuating outdated stereotypes and not showcasing women in leadership positions, the media hinders progress toward gender equality. It's crucial to change the way women are depicted in the media so that their capabilities and positive contributions are recognized by all.
