At its recent annual general meeting in mid Nov 2025, the President of MIC reportedly told the media that the party’s delegates had voted to support the motion for the party to leave BN and join PN but leave the decision when to leave to him and the party leadership.
The President, reportedly was also quoted to have said that `exiting BN is just a matter of who and when’.
Following this, the Chairperson of PN reportedly said on 30 Nov 2025 that MIC has applied to join PN and the application will be jointly decided by the PN Supreme Council when it meets soon.
MIC was quick to come out the next day on 1 Dec 2025 saying MIC sent a letter to PN only to enquire about membership details and processes.
The letter which was undated and signed by the President of MIC to the Chairman of PN with the heading READMISSION TO PERIKATAN NASIONAL has been making its rounds of late.
READMISSION?
According to Cambridge dictionary, READMISSION is permission to join an organization again after not being a member for a period of time.
According to publicly available records, in July 2020, the MIC Central Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution to join PN on the proviso that its main coalition partner in Barisan Nasional (BN), UMNO, would also join.
When UMNO announced it would not be part of the PN coalition, MIC retracted its application and decided against joining PN, in August 2020.
Reportedly, days before MIC’s decision to retract its application, the BN chairman confirmed publicly that MIC will be part of PN.
In a letter to the Registrar of Societies signed by the party’s secretary-general, MIC apparently reiterated that since Umno announced that it has no intention of joining PN on July 29, the decision made by the MIC supreme council in July 2020 was no longer applicable.
It thus appeared that MIC’s application to join PN in July / August 2020 was retracted before PN accepted and approved it.
If this is the case, how could PN re-admit MIC now when the party’s application to join in July / Aug 2020 was retracted before it could be accepted, deliberated and agreed upon?
The response to the decision of the delegates at the MIC AGM was also quick and swift with the BN Chairman reportedly saying the next day, on 19 Nov 2025, that he would respect MIC’s decision if the party chooses to leave the coalition.
In fact, in mid Oct 2025, way before the MIC AGM, the BN Chairman reportedly said BN is open to accepting whatever decision made by the MIC leadership.
And for added effect, the BN Chairman was quoted to have added that he hoped MIC won’t regret their decision later.
MIC can’t get any clearer response when the response came from the BN Chairman himself.
How low can MIC go when the BN Chairman can tell you, if you want to leave, sayonara.
First in July 2020, UMNO did not deemed it necessary to consult and inform MIC of their decision not to join PN, leaving MIC in an embarrasing position of having to retract their conditional application to join PN.
Then now in the present time, the delegates had already voiced out and agreed unanimously to leave BN but left the decision to the leadership who still appears reluctant to let go clinging on to the hope that they would be persuaded or cajoled into remaining.
The writing was already on the wall but the leaders in MIC refused to accept it.
Probably the leaders are well aware that once they step away from BN, they are likely to join Gerakan in their wayward wandering on the road to total oblivion like another political party, PPP who is now just a footnote in the annals of the political landscape in Malaysia.
