In the modern era, the old adage “money can't buy happiness” is frequently met with a cynical retort: “but it can pay rent”. While we often try to separate our humanity from our bank accounts, the reality of the 21st century suggests a much tighter knot between the two. In a practical, physiological, and social sense, money is the lifeblood of our existence.
At its most primal level, money is the medium through which we sustain biological life. It is the bridge between a human being and the resources required to stay alive. In ancient times, “life” was sustained by the direct harvest of the land; today, that harvest is mediated by currency. Wealth dictates the quality of nutrition, the speed of medical intervention, and the safety of the enviroment in which we live. A financial cushion provides a psychological safety net. Poverty, conversely, is a form of chronic biological stress that has been scientifically proven to shorten human lifespans. In this context, money is literally “years added” to a person's life.
Beyond mere survival, money acts as the utility of life. Perhaps its most valuable attribute is its ability to buy back our time. When we say money is life, we are acknowledging that time is our most finite resource. Financial independence allows an individual to dictate their own schedule, choose their own labor, and walk away from toxic enviroments. It funds the education, travel, and creative pursuits that form our identity. Without money. “life” is often reduced to a cycle of repetitive labor, with it, life becomes a canvas for personal growth and exploration. However, equating money with life carries a significant psychological risk. When the pursuit of wealth becomes the sole objective, the “life” part of the equation begins to wither.
“Money is a great servant but a bad master” - Francis Bacon
If we define our entire existence by our net worth, we fall into the “Hedonic Treadmill”, where no amount of accumulation is ever enough. True “life” requires connection, purpose, and presence - intangibles that money can facilitate, but never manufacture.
