Recently, the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) started their investigations on some political parties. Prime Minister Datuk Anwar Ibrahim said that they should not be afraid to be investigated if they are clean. Instead, those under investigation should provide explanations and allow authorities to act freely.
Similarly, in our daily lives we tend to be defensive when we are caught with our pants down. For example, if we did not do wrong, we will have no fear when a policeman stops our vehicle and approaches us. However, if we have consciously gone against traffic rules, we will be fearful. Then, most offenders will try to explain and give excuses to get off the hook. How many will readily admit their offence? Hence, it is good to bear in mind to always have clean hands and pure hearts.
Laws in the country and regulations in schools and places of work are meant to guide and protect the people. So, it is imperative for all of us to give these laws our highest regards. We cannot just plead ignorance when we are caught violating the law. Achieving the high standard of a nation that follows the rule of law takes time and great effort. Our people need to be educated on the importance of obeying the laws. They need to understand the consequences of flouting them.
In fact, from a young age, all of us have been taught to obey house rules, school rules and the like. Yet, we see motorists trying to beat the traffic lights, making illegal U turns and defying parking rules. We also hear of the mishandling of funds, cheating and breaching of trust, causing great losses to our nation, organizations and companies.
Will Malaysia ever be a clean nation who is proud of her diverse heritage and talents? We can be if we want to. We can be if all of us coming from different strata of society agree to unite to make this country what we want it to be. We can become a clean nation if each one of us will pause and reflect, take courage to admit where we have gone wrong and correct the situation. It is definitely a hard choice. Do we have the courage to move towards having a clear conscience and come clean?
May God help us so that we have clean hands and pure hearts.
