The political turmoil is becoming increasingly intriguing. Recently, cracks have begun to show within Parti Bersatu, with two factions emerging — one led by President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the other by Deputy President Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. The internal rift became more apparent following the dismissal of Supreme Council member Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan. Meanwhile, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, known for his outspoken stance in Parliament, has been suspended for one term. Four other members — Mohd Azrudin Md Idris, Mohd Faizal Asmar, Mohd Fahdli Ismail, and Mohd Isa Mohd Saidi — were also expelled. They acknowledge that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s contributions as Prime Minister during the nation’s Covid-19 crisis cannot be denied. However, the political landscape has since changed. Muhyiddin is now seen as having lost his edge, and there is a growing faction within the party pushing for Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin — regarded as a more vocal and dynamic presence in Parliament — as Opposition Leader.
This reflects the failure of certain politicians who fail to realise that their time in the political spotlight has long expired and that it may be time to step aside. Worse still are the die-hard loyalists surrounding them — individuals desperate to keep their leader in power as their own political survival is tied to his position, often amid ongoing controversies. These political “yes-men” have turned the party into a lethargic and ineffective opposition within Parliament. Muhyiddin, meanwhile, appears reluctant to distance himself from those clinging to his influence, perhaps too easily lulled by praise and the comfort of daytime delusions.
All this does not bode well for a party that should be preparing to become a strong opposition capable of challenging Pakatan Harapan in the next general election — under the leadership of Anwar Ibrahim, who appears increasingly muscular and energised, bolstered by the growing influence of global power player Donald Trump. In the art of politics, it is often the case that a weak and divided opposition signals good news for the ruling party. Yet in politics, anything is possible — an ant can turn into a dragon, and a dragon can shrink into an ant. The real danger lies in the public growing weary of these political clowns to the point that they stop voting altogether, leaving the nation in the hands of loud, directionless jesters who shout and squabble in Parliament like fools in a circus.
The nation is expected to face extraordinary challenges, as the next Prime Minister or ruling government will have to grapple with the conditions allegedly promised by Anwar to Donald Trump. This battle will not only test Malaysia’s diplomacy and sovereignty but also raise fears that the country could fall prey to a major power — leaving its own citizens marginalised in their homeland, as highlighted in Parliament by Pasir Gudang MP, YB Hassan Karim. Let us hope the nation’s fate does not mirror the old Malay proverb: “The land we stand upon belongs to others; our ancestors once prospered, yet all treasures are now lost. Through our own divisions, the wealth flows into foreign hands — leaving the sons of the soil to weep alone.”
