Dear PMX,
The current national discourse regarding development and social equity continues to be viewed through an increasingly narrow lens—one that prioritizes the advancement of the majority under the guise of "Malay Supremacy." While political leadership has changed, the underlying philosophy remains static: a belief that the fruits of national growth belong primarily to one community, while others must survive on the periphery.
Now, literally allowing the temples and community's stature to be tainted as troublemakers or not law abiding or "demanding" community.
This narrative relies on two dangerous tropes. First, it assumes the Chinese community is inherently self-sufficient, a perception used to justify lopsided state patronage. Second, it forces the Indian community, specifically Tamilians, into a position of "pleaders." We are often characterized as "overly demanding" relative to the population size, a label that serves only to erase the monumental contributions our forefathers made to this nation's early infrastructure and economy developments.
By rewriting history to frame the Malays as the sole pillar of development, the state ignores the sweat and sacrifice of the non-Malay laborers who built the infrastructures, plantations as well managing the institutions that fueled the early growth.
Furthermore, the push toward an administration rooted strictly in Islamic and Malay cultural values ignores the diverse social fabric of our nation, including the unique constitutional standing of Sabah and Sarawak.
A nation cannot truly prosper if its minorities are treated as guests who must beg for rights, rather than citizens who have earned them. We must move away from a hierarchy of "deservingness" and toward a system of genuine national equity.
Respectfully,
Vivehananthan Vairakkannu
