You stated recently that taxes collected under SST help fund critical public services and national defence such as hospital repairs, fix roads, build schools, or buy new aircraft for our Armed Forces.

Consider the poor in Malaysia.

Do they need a fire department? They stay in squalid conditions in boxed up flats that measures no more than 800 sq ft for a family of 5 or more.

Do they need police protection?

Thieves won’t even ventured into their place let alone steal from their houses or apartments.

If there are any disturbances, it gets over before the police show up, if they even bother.

Do they need smooth nicely paved roads and connectivity when connectivity to them is either walking under the hot sun or ride a scooter that carries a family of 5?

Medical help means a whole day affair where they spend countless unproductive hours in the waiting area for their turn to see a doctor.

Do they care whether the government is helmed by PAS or DAP?

It might actually improve their situation as these 2 has less corruption cases recorded or filed against them than their predecessors.

The wealthy has a lot more to lose.

They have more to lose if public security and safety deteriorates.

They are unable to drive out and about and showed off their million ringgit marquee cars to the public because of the potholes filled roads that would damage their tyre rims.

Except for places where there are jockey services, they can’t just simply park their cars in any public parking space for fear that their cars would be vandalised or their windows smashed.

Every night before they go to bed, they are worried that someone will break into their house.

Their business needs roads and rails and airports to deliver goods.

And most importantly, they need workers who are educated.

Wealthy people use more services, both in an absolute and a relative sense.

They need the government more.

They want legal protection for their ideas or legal intervention against competitors.

They may have reason to fear foreign competition with their business, or businesses in which they invest.

So, shouldn’t the wealthy be paying more taxes, both absolutely and relatively.

Why is this difficult to comprehend?
