The President of UMNO and Chairman of BN reportedly said state-level political rivalry will not affect federal govt stability.
That is after BN, in an official collaboration with an Opposition party at the Federal level, steamrolled their partner, PH in the recent elections in Johor.
And then repeat the same feat again, almost a month later in the elections in Negeri Sembilan.
He claimed that political developments following the state elections in Johor and Negri Sembilan, would neither alter the direction of the Madani government’s administration nor affect the implementation of planned government policies, programmes and projects as the unity government was formed based on mutual understanding and an agreement that would remain in force until Parliament is dissolved.
He, however, put a caveat emptor to this claim saying as long as Parliament is not dissolved, the federal government will continue to function, the administration will carry on, and every responsibility entrusted to them by the people will be fulfilled as usual.
Is he living in a bubble or he believes that in today’s world where people spend time reading and sharing news on social media, news of both BN / UMNO and PH mauling at each other during the campaigns in both states with murderous rage did not reach the ordinary rakyat?
When the federal government and state governments belong to different political parties or rival coalitions, governance often becomes tense and complex.
Both levels depend on each other for financial resources, infrastructure development, and legal execution.
Political differences can slow down cooperation.
During the campaigns, the ordinary rakyat alrerady witnessed leaders at both levels use administrative friction to score political points against their rivals rather than compromise.
The two levels are supposed to work together to help implement federal programs and mandates.
As pointed by him, political parties don’t have to forfeit their respective identities or political principles.
But with different coalitions, rivals, governing the Federal and State, with each having their own respective identities or political principles, does he really expect the ordinary rakyat to believe that everything will proceed smoothly and honky dory?
Probably he holds on to the belief, as affirmed in Johor and reaffirmed again in Negeri Sembilan that voters now vote based on shared identity or party loyalty instead of individual facts and thus his statement is targeted towards cognitive shortcuts, identity loyalties and spread through today’s fast-moving media environment.
Arising from BN’s actions in contesting the elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan on their own, it has effectively placed the madani government on life support.
Malaysians are no longer that dumb, stupid and gullible.
They are now just waiting for when you or parties aligned to BN will pull the plug on the Madani government before the end of its full tenure.
