Yes, Malaysia faced significant financial losses hosting Formula 1, spending roughly RM300 million annually while generating lower tourism returns, leading to declining ticket sales and the eventual end of the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit in 2017.
Organizing the event required roughly RM300 million per year in operating and hosting expenditures.
Tourism receipts from foreign attendees only brought in between RM210 million and RM280 million annually, failing to cover the outlay.
Spectator numbers dwindled (dropping to around 45,000 attendees by 2016).
Already in Aug 2025, when queried, the then Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, confirmed there are no plans to bring F1 back due to escalating rights fees—which now surpass $70 million exclusive of operational costs—making it an unjustifiable expense compared to more affordable events like MotoGP.
For those members of PAS and all those righteous and religious people, they do not need to be reminded that Formula 1, generally, is closely tied to vice industries—specifically alcohol, and gambling—which historically and currently provide massive financial backing through sponsorships and global race promotions.
Do not come out and start voicing out your righteousness when after millions, mind you, tax payers’ monies are already spent to secure the rights to host the F1.
Come out now and protest against any intention by the government to contemplate bringing back F1 to the country.
If PAS and all those righteous and religious people are so vociferous against the hosting of the Bukit Bintang Water Musical Festival (Rain Rave) in Kuala Lumpur in April 2026, claiming it promoted "free mixing" and moral harm Water Festival, harm from hosting the F1 is at least multiple times worse than the Water Festival.
Don’t hide.
Come out voice it loudly and clearly to the government not to dream.
