After the Election Commission announced the polling dates for the 15th General Election (GE15), I came across many discussions about who to vote for.
Someone raised the question: Should we just submit a spoilt vote?
The reason? Because of the dissatisfaction with the political turmoil happening in the country for so many years.
Some claimed that a spoiled vote by everyone demonstrates that voters are dissatisfied with the political chaos and hence do not support any party.
So after the announcement of the final result, the ruling party may improve themselves and their services rather than being self-absorbed and believing that “hey, the rakyat now likes us so much and we can do whatever we want!”
In my personal opinion, a spoilt vote is still a wasted vote. It means nothing. It doesn’t solve the problem at all. It is like allowing the troublemakers to continue doing what they are doing without being challenged.
It is difficult to determine if the politicians care about the lost votes. Maybe they will just focus on their victory? The truth is that nullifying these votes won’t have any impact on the nation unless the authorities acknowledge their significance.
Better politics will gradually emerge when more and more voters begin to understand how to cast informed votes. Not merely voting for nothing in the election.
My suggestion is, at least do some homework before you go to vote. Check their facts. Know what they have done and haven’t done. Understand what they are telling us and their ability to do so.
After all, what we need is the ability to think independently. The final decision must be made after careful evaluation. We are not much different from blind supporters if we decide to cast a void vote without knowing the candidates or political parties.
