The education system is paramount for any country to prosper and move forward to becoming a sustainable nation. We have seen in the country that the education system is not dynamic, and it will cause socioeconomic issues, including political unrest. It is evident in many countries like Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Haiti, Guatemala, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Angola, etc.

Now, we have the above statistics to analyze and apprehend whether our education system is on the right track or requires an overhaul. Another pertinent question is passing marks for all grades and whether the passing marks vary based on race.

I would like the government to reveal the student’s performance in government, private, religious, and MRSM. In addition, assess those from vernacular schools to measure whether students from this type of school can cope and perform at the secondary level. Therefore, we hope the Unity government can reveal these details to benefit society and the nation.

The recent SPM results disclosure made many wonders why many or most students failed to cut to pass the exam. I guess this is the first time the new government, i.e., the Unity government, had the courage and political will to disclose the complete and comprehensive 2022 SPM results. Let’s put those details in the proper perspective.

Total SPM students sat 373,974

No of Students obtained:

Grade A (A+, A, A-) – 10,109 (2.7%)

Grade C – 75,322 (20.1%)

Grade E – 128,193 (34.3%)

Failed to obtain SPM certificates – 31,329 (8.4%)

*Total did not sit – 14,858 students

Suppose we combine all Grade E, Mixed Grades and Failed, which represent 77.2%. In that case, I reckon it is alarming how these students will excel or perform well academically in at least getting a diploma in their various disciplines and eventually getting a decent job. This will undoubtedly cause a massive mismatch between industry expectations and student’s ability to meet those expectations, considering the emergence of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, which may replace many monotonous jobs. This will cause a huge income disparity between the top and low-level income; thus, the middle income will be a marginal group or percentage.

I hope the government comes out with a so-called White Paper and deliberates this matter not only in Parliament to get various feedback but from academicians to get to the bottom and find the right and sustainable solutions. In addition, form a special committee to develop comprehensive studies and solutions.
