……..……. given the maximum sentence provided for under the relevant sections of the Penal Code for which they are charged.

Was that `stare' so penetrating and deadly from one man, alone at that 3 other men to warrant them to kick and drag that lone man across the floor by his hair viciously including throwing a kettle, presumably filled with hot water at the man?

All 3 of them should be thankful that they will be punished, no matter how extreme are the terms, under a criminal justice system based on common laws, designed to protect the rights of the accused while maintaining public order, primarily governed by the Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Evidence Act and not laws based on one’s beliefs.

And they should be thanking their lucky stars that the man that they attacked did not succumb to their blows.

The actions of that 3 men have now affected the livelihoods of all those living in the vicinity of Kepong.

The shop where this incident happened, probably suffered a drop in their business for the few days or weeks subsequent to the incident as potential patrons would refrain from patronising the shop for fear that the same could happen to them if they are to dine there.

Who is going to bear the losses for the shop owner?

If the situation persists, the shop might even have to cease business temporarily or permanently.

If this happen, who is going to compensate those workers who lost their livelihood because of the act of the 3 men?

Suppliers who supply to the shop probably would have lost their single biggest customer ie the shop where the incident happened and because of this, they have to downsize and lay off their workers too.

Neighbouring shops who benefited from the foot traffic that the shop brought would see lesser traffic and consequently a drop in their business too.

And members of the public, who could potentially want to venture to Kepong to look and savor many of the fine food there might now think twice about venturing into Kepong.

Business people in Kepong would have lost a lot of opportunities and growth in their business owing to this incident.

What about the man that was beaten?

Already he claimed that he is suffering mental anguish and other physical injuries that limits his movements and ability to undertake tasks which he would have performed normally as before the beating.

Probably he will require long term medication and treatment for his mental condition.

The assault was so vicious that no justice would be served if the sentence is any less than the maximum terms under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and is punishable by a fine or whipping.

The Attorney General and the Magistrate need to show and convince the public that Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur and in particular, Kepong in this case, is very safe and people can move around freely without fear of being attacked violently.
