As we mark the second anniversary of Anwar Ibrahim’s Unity Government, a harsh reality has set in: the promised “reformasi” that once inspired hope has become a tired echo in the corridors of Putrajaya.
BERSIH’s scathing assessment of Anwar’s administration exposes the glaring gap between promise and performance, leaving both the rakyat and civil society disillusioned.
A Missed Opportunity for Reforms
Armed with a commanding parliamentary majority, Anwar’s government was poised to become the beacon of reform Malaysia desperately needed.
Yet, as BERSIH rightly points out, even the low-hanging fruits of electoral and institutional reform remain untouched. This is not due to a lack of parliamentary strength but rather a lack of political will—a devastating indictment for a prime minister whose career was built on the narrative of change.
The comparison with past administrations adds insult to injury. Ismail Sabri Yaakob, with a more tenuous hold on power, delivered landmark reforms such as the anti-hopping law and Undi18. Even Mahathir’s short-lived second tenure saw meaningful steps towards structural changes. Anwar’s lack of urgency, despite his strong mandate, is perplexing and inexcusable.
The Illusion of Engagement
BERSIH generously acknowledges Anwar’s willingness to engage with civil society—a first for any Malaysian prime minister. But empty dialogue without action is a hollow gesture. https://newswav.com/article/bersih-names-ismail-sabri-the-best-pm-since-2009-calls-out-pmx-for-lack-of-A2411_uWZr4J?s=A_uC6nJRf&
Nine months after BERSIH presented its list of reform priorities, there is still no visible progress. Anwar’s failure to act underscores a troubling complacency that betrays the trust of his supporters.
The Costs of Inaction
The stakes are high. Electoral and institutional reforms are not mere political luxuries; they are critical to restoring faith in Malaysia’s democracy. Anwar’s reluctance to champion these reforms risks alienating the very groups that propelled him to power—youths, reform advocates, and the marginalized.

As BERSIH highlights, Anwar’s government cannot hide behind excuses of political instability or opposition sabotage. The Unity Government’s strong majority was its greatest asset, but it is fast becoming its greatest liability—a stark reminder that power without purpose is a wasted opportunity.
Two Years Wasted, a Legacy in Question
As we reflect on Anwar Ibrahim’s two years in power, it is hard not to feel a profound sense of disappointment. https://newswav.com/article/opinion-big-talk-loud-noise-won-t-win-elections-keeping-promises-does-A2411_wHCtw6?s=A_PggPUOA&language=en
The rakyat entrusted him with their hopes, and BERSIH stood by him in the streets, demanding a cleaner and fairer Malaysia. Yet, two years later, they are left with broken promises and unfulfilled reforms.

History will judge Anwar not by his rhetoric but by his results. If he continues down this path of complacency, his legacy will not be that of a reformer but of yet another politician who failed to rise to the moment.
The rakyat deserves better. BERSIH deserves better. Malaysia deserves better. Anwar Ibrahim, the time for excuses is over—deliver or step aside.
