It was meant to be a signing ceremony to remember — Malaysia and the United States sealing a “historic” Reciprocal Trade Agreement. NST
But as always, Malaysians have an uncanny ability to turn solemn moments into social media gold. This time, it wasn’t the trade numbers that trended. It was a pen.
You know that shiny blue “White House” pen — now immortalised in a meme with a price tag reading:
“US$240 billion (RM1.02 trillion) — Kedaulatan Negara.”
Apparently, this was no ordinary pen. This was the pen that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim gleefully pocketed after President Donald Trump handed it over, sealing both the agreement and Malaysia’s newest internet joke. NST
For a nation weary of reading about lost billions, seeing our leader “secure” something — even if it’s just office stationery — feels oddly comforting.
Finally, Malaysia didn’t lose a trillion. We gained one. In pen form.
Social media went wild. One meme called it “the most expensive souvenir since 1MDB.” Another said, “This pen alone can wipe out our national debt — or write new ones.” A TikTok wag even suggested it be kept in Bank Negara’s vault under “strategic assets.”
The symbolism was too delicious to ignore. Trump gives a pen. Anwar takes it. Somewhere in between, RM1.02 trillion apparently changes hands — metaphorically, of course.
But in the age of optics, a viral photo can be worth more than any bilateral agreement.
Let’s be honest, the moment was classic Anwar: part showman, part sentimentalist. “White House pen,” he grinned, pocketing it like a kid who just got a gold star.
After all, who wouldn’t want a souvenir from Trump — a man whose own signature looks like a seismograph reading during an earthquake?
Meanwhile, Malaysians, ever the cynics, couldn’t resist reading deeper meaning into the gesture. Was this symbolic of Malaysia’s new subservience to Washington?
Or just proof that even at the highest levels of power, old habits die hard — like pocketing pens from hotel conference rooms?
Either way, it’s poetic. Once upon a time, Malaysia was accused of losing billions to corruption. Today, we celebrate a leader for “acquiring” a trillion-ringgit pen. Progress, some might say.
Perhaps that’s what diplomacy is all about now — not the fine print, but the fine pen. The memes practically write themselves: “Anwar signs for sovereignty — using borrowed ink.”
So, when the next press conference rolls around, don’t be surprised if the Prime Minister brandishes that same pen proudly, reminding us all that while others may take from Malaysia, this time Malaysia took something back — even if it came with a trillion-ringgit price tag.
At least this time, we know where the money went. It’s in the pocket — safely capped, ink intact, and meme-certified.
