Since 26 October 2025, when the reciprocal Trade Agreement between Donald Trump of the United States (US) and Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia was officially signed, a series of implications, objections, protests, and debates has emerged among professionals, legal practitioners, political leaders, the media, and industrialist. The main question dominating the discourse is whether the nation’s dignity and sovereignty have been compromised in favour of a major global power like the US. Every line and word of the agreement has been examined, scrutinised, and interpreted by various groups. The debate intensified further when the opposition raised the issue in Parliament, where it was defended by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The tension reached a point where the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, reacted emotionally in defence of his minister. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens remain baffled, trying to determine what is true and what is misleading.
The world is well acquainted with the economic playbook of the United States—an approach often characterised by strategic influence, subtle pressure, and long-term leverage. It is this pattern that has stirred unease among geopolitical analysts who now fear that Malaysia may be walking into a familiar web of economic dependency. Their concerns are not unfounded. For years, scholars and whistle-blowers have documented how Washington projects power beyond its borders, not always through military might, but through financial instruments, trade agreements, and development loans that bind smaller nations into asymmetrical relationships. 1971的印度尼西亚 5 First Job, 1971 Indonesia - John Perkins - YouTube
The alarm grows louder when viewed through the lens of John Perkins’ explosive exposé, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (EHM): The Shocking Inside Story of How America Really Took Over the World. Perkins details how developing countries were enticed—sometimes coerced—into signing deals that appeared beneficial on the surface, yet ultimately funnelled wealth, resources, and geopolitical loyalty back to the US. Against this backdrop, critics fear the new reciprocal Trade Agreement may bear the same signature traits: disproportionate advantages for Washington, long-term obligations for Malaysia, and mechanisms of control that operate beneath the diplomatic language of “partnership” and “mutual benefit.” To them, this agreement is not merely a document—it may be the opening chapter of a new economic script, one that Malaysia must read with caution. Confessions of an Economic Hitman - John Perkins | Short Documentary
In his book, John Perkins reveals that his role as an Economic Hit Man (EHM) was “Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools included fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization.” Bing Videos
Is the EHM model still in existence today, or has it evolved into an even more sophisticated system—one that allows powerful nations like the United States to easily consume weaker or less prepared countries? If this agreement turns out to mirror the very traps described by the EHM framework, then it may one day be remembered as a national tragedy—one that leaves the people of this country deeply wounded. In such a scenario, the idea of shouting “independence” would lose its meaning entirely.
In truth, the only way to reassure the public and reveal the real contents of this agreement is for the government to bring forward the officials who were actually involved in conceptualising, studying, and drafting it. The public has grown weary and no longer trusts explanations from politicians, whose statements often feel theatrical and inconsistent. Yet only two figures appear to be offering clarification on an agreement of such scale and importance. Is it really just PMX and Zafrul? Where is the Chief Secretary to the Government (KSU), and where are the responsible senior officials?
