Recently, UMNO’s Secretary General reportedly denied the party’s involvement in the ongoing crisis in Negeri Sembilan.
Umno is the only political party whose constitution explicitly calls for its members to uphold the institution of the Malay rulers and protecting and upholding the Minangkabau customary law Adat Perpatih, as practiced in Negeri Sembilan, was also one of the party’s commitments during its election campaign for the state’s polls
He also said the people must be given the correct facts.
The facts based on public news are as follows:-
- April 19, 2026: The four Undangs issue a proclamation removing Tuanku Muhriz from the throne and installing Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja'afar as the new ruler, citing alleged misconduct.
- April 21, 2026: Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun (Pakatan Harapan) rejects the Undangs' declaration as invalid, arguing that prior dismissals meant the council lacked the proper quorum.
- April 23, 2026: The Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly sitting is disrupted and postponed after the Undangs boycott the opening ceremony.
- April 27, 2026: All 14 UMNO-Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblymen, led by Negeri Sembilan UMNO chairman Jalaluddin Alias, officially withdraw support from Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun. They cite Aminuddin's handling of the royal crisis and a failure to respect adat (customary) institutions. This drops the PH-led government's seat count to 17 out of 36, falling short of the 19-seat simple majority. Perikatan Nasional (PN) offers 5 seats to back a new configuration.
- April 30 – May 5, 2026: UMNO Secretary-General Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and national leadership work to stabilize the unity government, and BN/PH reach a temporary consensus to maintain the state administration.
- June 4–5, 2026: In a late-night press conference, Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun announces that the state's ruler, Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz, has consented to dissolve the state assembly effective June 5, 2026. Aminuddin states the dissolution is necessary to seek a fresh mandate from the people and resolve the political uncertainty.
- June 5, 2026: The state’s traditional chieftains (Undangs) formally object to the dissolution. They issue a legal letter arguing the assembly cannot be dissolved without their joint concurrence as co-rulers, threatening to escalate the matter to court. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim quickly reiterates federal backing for Tuanku Muhriz and fully supports Aminuddin's call for a snap election.
- July 2026: The Election Commission sets the snap polls for August 1, 2026.
- August 1, 2026: The 2026 Negeri Sembilan state election results in a landslide victory for the BN-PN alliance, which secures a two-thirds majority (25 out of 36 seats).
- August 2, 2026: With the majority secured by the new alliance, UMNO's Ismail Lasim is officially sworn in as the new Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
Probably UMNO’s Secretary General can enlighten the public based on the above sequence and timeline of events.
That UMNO did not caused the dissolution of the state assembly?
That the Mentri Besar signed the proclamation of 19 April 2026 under duress as he claimed?
On July 24, 2026, just days before the Negeri Sembilan snap election, the Deputy President of UMNO stated that Barisan Nasional (BN) had the best method to resolve the state's royal dispute involving the four Undangs (Ruling Chiefs) and Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
The campaign pitch worked, and Barisan Nasional and its allies wrested full control of the state in the August 1, 2026.
Despite the promise to restore calm, the political crisis intensified rather than being resolved.
