The by-election fever has passed! As the people have exercised their rights, it is important that they know who they are voting for.
Nonetheless, the majority consensus in any community contends that everyone must vote for a certain party to ensure they can either maintain the status quo or challenge the ones in power. However, fresh voters who are young and politically unaware are subjected to pressure and submit themselves to what most people say and do.
Therefore, it is imperative that young voters are educated and stay informed of what promises each candidate brings to the people. They have to remember that they are more powerful than politicians as they are the ones who give the latter power and authority to lead them.
Young voters have to also realise that they are one of the most imperative assets to the country in future. They must be equipped with adequate knowledge of the political climate and vote wisely to ensure they do not go to the polls with hatred but facts.
When I went out to vote for the state elections recently in the previous year, I was surprised to find independent candidates contesting in the ballot sheet as well. In fact, I wanted to know more of what they offered. Yet, it was too late.
Therefore, every voter including existing ones ought to instil the habit of digging for more information on candidates who are not mainstream; look up their background and manifestos.
No matter what the results of the upcoming election turn out to be, voters must learn that they have individual voices as well and are not required to follow what the majority consensus is; that includes your parents!
At the end of the day, no matter what party the politician is from, as long as the representative is integral, competent, responsible and most importantly, walks the talk.
