There is currently a high-profile constitutional crisis in Negeri Sembilan, where the state executive council (exco) – comprising mainly of representatives from UMNO - has attempted to recognize the removal of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
UMNO Youth has frequently positioned itself as a vocal defender of Malay-Muslim and royal interests.
It has previously pushed for strict legal measures and firm enforcement against individuals deemed insolent or disrespectful toward the Malay Rulers.
Akmal Saleh has repeatedly stated that UMNO Youth treats any uncouth remarks or prejudice directed at the Rulers as a critical red line, declaring that the wing will stand up firmly defend the Malay Rulers (raja-raja) and oppose any parties making insolent or challenging statements against the royal institution.
Is UMNO Youth going to mediate and ask the 4 Undangs, the Mentri Besar and the State Excos to let bygones by bygones just like how Akmal Salleh urges both PAS and Umno Youth let bygones by bygones recently?
The issue has left supporters on both sides equally convinced their claimant is the legitimate state ruler.
The stand-off has moved beyond palace walls and into the courts, with competing sides battling over the legality of key decisions, the appointment of customary chiefs and the constitutional process governing the throne.
It is a constitutional crisis unlike any Malaysia has seen.
The federal government, of which UMNO is a part of, continues to recognise the present Yang di Pertuan Besar while the state government, led by UMNO publicly want the present Yang di Pertuan Besar to be replaced.
Prior to the elections on 1 Aug 2026, UMNO condemned the previous Mentri Besar for meddling because the state government actively intervened by disputing the status of one of the chieftains involved (the Undang of Sungai Ujong, Datuk Mubarak Dohak), arguing he had already been removed according to custom.
While UMNO’s top national leadership claims it will "not dirty its hands", the actions of UMNO Negeri Sembilan and the new UMNO-led state government have put its political credibility directly on the line.
It is thus, imperative that UMNO Youth mediate in this to restore the party’s credibility.
