Other than the massive hype about badminton's men's singles Lee Jee Zia's recent bronze medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics, there is another thing in the form of a visual aesthetic that catches the eye of others, especially Malaysian fashionistas when the young badminton ace has returned home to local shores.
No doubt, this coveted item is Lee's striking green-colored Goyard luggage bag bought from a chunk of his blood and sweat RM100,000.00 prize money. For many fashion-savvy individuals, the French fashion label Goyard is not a stranger in the haute couture world since it has a slightly older fashion establishment than its nearest arch-rival, Louis Vuitton.
Although the brand Goyard rings a bell to me, I am still unfamiliar with its trending haute couture reputation. Call me a generic haute couture lover, but compared to the more popular Louis Vuitton, Goyard is 100% haute couture but in an understated way. According to my research on the web, Goyard was originally used by kings, presidents, and people of high aristocracy in France. On the pop culture site, A-lister hip hop celebs like Usher Raymond, Pharrell, and Kanye West have previously shared their massive love for the brand by displaying their chosen arm candy for others to see in public.
On the contrary, although Lee may be a bonafide badminton whiz, his chosen fashion accessory is questionable. For starters, the green Goyard bag does not even use genuine leather despite its haute couture status. Second, the bag's weird green shade and tacky imprint remind me of a bizarre-looking "Ketupat". The only other side food missing is some glorious Malaysian-style rendang. Jokes aside, this bag is a steeply-priced arm candy that costs a princely fortune. Fourth, this bag does not represent the aesthetic and impeccable craftsmanship of haute couture as the material looks cheap and flimsy.
If it were me, I would have chosen another arm candy that looks more visually aesthetic, yet classy at the same time. We are talking about Paris, France the city of romance and ubiquitous French haute couture retail boutiques. However, if jarring eye-popping colors and outlandish fashion are not your style, it is best to stick back to the safest bet, like the usual classic monogrammed LV bag. After all, you would not want to look like a human cartoon character lookalike I frequently saw and bumped into at the local food court. That person I mentioned looked so "out of place" and ridiculous that she could pass off as the Good Witch from the musical Wicked.
The late great Yves Saint Laurent once said," Fashion fades, Style is Eternal," so choose your fashion choice wisely despite how hot-selling or in vogue that particular material item is. Or else, I suggest one should go back to the basics of Zen minimalism aesthetics since staple fashion items like a simple white tee can't get you into trouble with the fashion police.
