The recurring question echoing through Umno’s 79th General Assembly was not merely about political alliances, but about fear. Why does DAP loom so large in Umno’s internal debates, speeches and anxieties? Is it truly about ideology and race, or does it reflect a deeper unease about accountability, reform and the shifting balance of power in Malaysian politics? Put simply, is Umno afraid of checks and balances in governance and the exposure of corruption?
Umno vice-president Dato' Seri Johari Abdul Ghani offered perhaps the most candid answer, even if indirectly. In his winding-up speech, Johari reminded delegates that Umno has never feared working with non-Malay-based parties. MCA, Gerakan and MIC were once integral components of Barisan Nasional, and cooperation with them was never framed as betrayal. So why, Johari asked, should DAP now be treated as an existential threat?
His answer was blunt and politically inconvenient: Umno’s real danger does not come from DAP, but from Malay disunity itself. History, Johari argued, shows that when a majority community becomes fractured, its political leverage weakens. The fear, therefore, should not be external, but internal.
Yet the assembly revealed how deeply anti-DAP sentiment has embedded itself within Umno’s grassroots. Despite efforts by senior leaders to redirect the conversation towards unity and governance, delegates repeatedly returned to DAP as the enemy of choice.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh’s declaration to “fight DAP to the end”, coupled with his resignation from the Melaka executive council, electrified the hall. It was a symbolic move that freed him from governmental restraint and positioned him as a full-time political attacker, reflecting the mood of many delegates hungry for confrontation rather than consolidation.
This fixation on DAP, however, raises uncomfortable questions. Is the fear truly about racial politics, or is it about DAP’s reputation for pushing institutional reform, transparency and stronger checks and balances? In a political culture long accustomed to dominance without scrutiny, a partner that insists on accountability can feel threatening. In that sense, fear of DAP may be less about race and more about exposure.
Party president Dato' Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi attempted to strike a more strategic tone with his “rumah besar” concept, framing Umno as the permanent political home for Malays. Yet even Zahid acknowledged an unspoken truth: Umno no longer enjoys an uncontested claim to Malay representation. Bersatu and PAS have fractured the once-monolithic Malay vote, leaving Umno to compete rather than command.
Johari’s football analogy perhaps best captured the moment. A strong team requires different players with different roles. If everyone wants to be the striker, the team collapses. Malaysian governance, like football, demands balance, discipline and cooperation, not perpetual hostility.
In the end, Umno’s obsession with DAP risks obscuring its real challenge: rebuilding trust, unity and relevance in a fragmented political landscape. Fear may be a powerful mobilising tool, but it is a poor foundation for governance.
If Umno is serious about reform and survival, it must confront not the spectre of DAP, but the deeper cracks within its own ranks, and find the courage to govern under scrutiny with a clean slate. Only by confronting and eradicating the culture of corruption within its own party can Umno exemplify integrity and earn the respect and dignity of a truly “new Umno”.
