What a preposterous conjecture!

Tun Daim is a trained lawyer and it would be foolhardy for him to be caught and charged with treason for trying to topple a legitimately elected government.

According to Focus Malaysia, UMNO supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam revealed that former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin had held a secret meeting with three opposition political party operators namely, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and Mohamed Azmin Ali former PKR deputy president who quit to join Bersatu.

Lokman was quoted by Focus Malaysia as saying that “This secret meeting is to plan unrest to topple the unity government led by Anwar Ibrahim in the wake of the upcoming state polls.”

This is indeed a serious allegation against a former Finance Minister.

In addition, Lokman on his FB Live clip, alleged that one of the plans being hatched is to hold by-elections for 15 MPs from UMNO who would have to resign from their current positions.

What would it take to persuade not one but 15 MPs to quit UMNO? And then convince them to contest for their seats again in by elections, soon after.

That's one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I have heard to date. It's just absurd.

But then again Lokman Adam is known for his lofty ideas. May be he knows something that we don't. But from what he said Lokman himself was not invited to that meeting.

So how does Lomkan come to that conclusion. He didn't say that the three party leaders or Tun Daim himself revealed what was discussed. It's a secret meeting. Right?

Anyway, this lofty tale from Lokman has prompted Harapan Daily to link that secret meeting to a political ploy by Tun Dr Mahathir who is alleged to disrupt the stability of the government led by Anwar Ibrahim.

That's another conjecture as good as Lokman's. If so, What's Daim's motive then?

Is it because he is being investigated by MACC or the LHDN? Is that a good enough motive to overthrow a government?

We do not think that would motivate Tun Daim who is frugal with his money to finance 15 MPs to quit UMNO and re-contest the same seats that they are already occupying now. That's throwing away good money just to bring down a political foe. Besides 15 MPs short will not make a dent in PH led government that has a two third majority.

It does not make any financial sense for a man who is a financial wizard who built an empire outside Malaysia when he quit as Finance Minister in order to avoid being labelled as one who used his former position to do business in the country. And use his money without getting anything in return for investing in a ridiculously expensive political venture.

I shall not deliberate on the issue of money laundering that was implied when an investigation was first mooted against Tun Daim. It is better that we leave to the authorities to conduct in-depth investigations before making premature conclusions.

On the other hand, these are not enough grounds for Tun Daim to back an illegal move to unseat PMX.

Until we hear sources more convincing than those provided by Lokman or Harapan Daily, we'll have to set aside these as pure speculations.
